About the Artist

Although
trained as a furniture maker, I've always enjoyed the challenge of
creating small objects in wood. Smaller is a great challenge, not only
do these pieces require tighter designs, they also require precise
execution. The
current
collection
was inspired by an idea to exploit a multi-layered
product made of birch wood. My goal was to draw out distinct lines and
light patterns while creating functional art objects. The
effect of cutting through many layers of wood and exposing edges
consciously can be dramatic. The pattern created echoes the rings of a
tree. When stained with brilliantly colored pigments, objects may not
appear to be wood, but rather ceramic, glass or marble. In
terms of design, I prefer simple lines and archetypal pieces. If I
were to describe my work as a collection, I'd use words such as
playful, contemporary, charming, clean, and colorful. My work seems to
fit in traditional as well as contemporary settings. Attention to detail is important to me - I use quality materials, from high-grade wood to brilliantly colored stains. I search for highly figured and unusual pieces of wood at sawmills and hardwood dealers. I
do all the work myself, using both power and hand tools. Once a piece
is constructed and sanded, a finish is applied. Each piece has four or
more coats of spray lacquer and sanding is required between coats to
achieve a smooth object with its own grain and character. Galleries
have displayed my work since 1995.
Each year I participate in a limited number of juried art
festivals across the country. There
are plans to expand this product line.
Look for new selections later this year. If you wish to be notified when new products are added to the site, join my mailing list. Send an email to updates@cynthiasmithwoodworks.com with the subject line "join list." |
